“What resources do I have to help me stay at home?” This is a big factor to consider for many older Americans who are finding it difficult to stay in their home. Many had simply not planned to live as long a life as they have and may not have the financial resources needed to live a comfortable life in their home. Neighbors and families may have moved away over the years and what was once a potential support group for these older Americans is no longer available. According to the National Council on Aging there are 3 main resources older Americans can consider. The NCOA lists these resources as Support From Others, Personal Finances, and Home Equity. See “Use Your Home to Stay at Home” report starting on page 6 for an amplification of these issues and resources available.
Over the next two weeks we will look at short-term and long-term solutions to these problems and how your home can be the resource you need.
